Stans ZTR 355: Out of the Box
May 5th, 2008 by ArleighI am very excited to be testing out a pair of Stans ZTR 355 650b wheels. Stans is a very welcomed rim in the new 650b market as it is tubeless ready and can be built up very light weight for the racer in you.
The wheel set that was built up for me:
- ZTR 355 rims
- American Classic disc hubs
- DT Supercomp Spokes
- Laced 3 cross
- Aluminum nipples
The weight with yellow tape and valve stem out of the box:
- Front: 692 grams
- Rear: 792 grams
The wheel built is recommended for 175 pound rider or below. Mainly due to the spokes chosen. When asked what type of riding I would be doing, or what type of wheel I was looking for I said XC, fast and durable. I’m sure they could of cut weight even more if I was looking for a pure race wheel but I wasn’t.
Retail on these wheels are about $660. The purple nipples you see are not a choice normally but maybe with the whole anodized trend that is happening again they will be. The wheels can be run disc or v-brake but seeing I have no 650b bikes for v-brake I will be running disc only.
Out of the box these wheels are a looker. They are also light in your hand but the rim feels solid. For the first couple weeks I plan on running tubes and then will go tubeless. Look for a first ride impression within the coming couple weeks!

Funny, just this morning I was thinking about building this configuration.
So I’m really looking forward to a review on these. Let us know how the hubs work out for you as well. Thanks!
Nalax,
So far so good. 2 good rides on them. By the end of the summer the hubs will be tested through out.
